In Vancouver, BC, Maffie is known for his talent and
versatility. His production skills have helped several Caribbean
bands and artists make it to the next level.
We caught up
with Ulan “Maffie” Atwell as he was busy in the studio working on a
new release. In this short interview, Maffie talks about how his
mother’s voice and her singing have influenced his career. Maffie went
on to produce her first CD, “Medley of love.” Download a free on my
web site.

Maffie:
Yes … you see me smiling, that’s because, nothing can replace the
sweet voice of a loving mother. Her voice and her music are the
reasons that a few of her children are vocal artists today. One of my
greatest joys in music was hearing my mother’s angelic singing voice
as a boy. She was always singing - she sang as a soloist in churches
in St Vincent, Trinidad, Toronto and Vancouver. Her passion and love
for singing started way before I was born and continued during the
raising of all of my brothers and sisters. Mom would practice by
singing to us. I remember one particular special children’s song
called “How Do You feel?” She would sing, “How Do You Feel?” and we
would reply, “I Feel All-right". My mother’s voice and her many songs
are among the musical influences.
Hands2help: Maffie your
website maffie.com has a free download of your mother Annis Quashie
singing the Christmas favourite “Joy to the World.” What can you tell
us about that particular track?
Maffie:
It’s actually interesting how that track came about. It started on
November 18, 2003 when I was recording a Christmas album, Old School
Christmas for Zerphrin Haywood. Luckily, my mom was visiting in
Vancouver at the same time. So mom asked if she could sing on the
beat. As she started singing, the memories of a Christmas concert of
1985 in SVG came rushing back. As I recorded those vocals, I savoured
my mother’s sweet voice and those pleasant memories.
Hands2help: What about
Christmas 1985 is so important for you?
Maffie:
Christmas and my mom are very special times for me. I remember
Christmas 1985 because mom was helping us rehearse a song called "Row
Me Over the Tide Boatman" for a concert. When my sister Quilan and I
performed that song, we won first place. Our joy at winning first
prize and our love for singing became a part of our lives from then
on. It made that a very special Christmas.
Hands2help: What was the
final outcome of the Christmas album?
Maffie:
Sam Hope, Fando Bynoe and Zephrin Haywood helped complete the Old
School Christmas album. In 2004, I reworked the tracks my mom sang
into a Christmas medley of Joy to the World, Silent Night and Auld
Lang Syne. That was the first time my mom was captured on disk and I
just knew there was nothing else that could take the place of such a
gift. For me, nothing can replace that sweet voice especially when I
think of all the people in the world who may never have a chance to
hear their mother's voice; I had to publish that track. You can get a
free copy of the Christmas medley Melody of Love at maffie.com.
Hands2help: Thanks Maffie.
